This is a tall textilis bamboo with arching at the top, and is characterized by white stripes on the culms.  This bamboo is similar to Graceful, only with the striping on the culms and a little taller.

Please note that the picture is of a young two year old plant started from a 3 gallon container.  It sent up 6 new culms and reached a height of about 12 feet in the first year and about 18 feet in the second year (with filtered sunlight) . 

Bottom line: Very good for either taller screening or hedging , or as a focal point.

This eye catching bamboo has a whitish coloration to the culms, hence the name.  It is a tight clumper with no low branching.  It is somewhat cold sensitive, so it should be located in a protected area (from wind).

Please note that a newly planted 3 gallon container plant is pictured.  

Bottom line: a stunning focal point bamboo.

This bamboo is stunning in appearance, characterized by a powder on the culms giving it a "blue tint".  The culms have a somewhat thin wall, but will increase in size and strength over time giving it a more erect appearance. It defoliated with an extended cold snap of 19 degrees and strong winds, but bounced back in very early spring with the existing culms producing new leaves and branches. 

Bottom Line: A tall ornamental bamboo that makes a great focal point or can be used for screening at a taller height.

Graceful Clumping Bamboo

This is a fast growing and beautiful bamboo.  The culms are erect and with a slight arching at the top, giving it a "graceful" appearance. 

 

The plant pictured started from a 3 gallon container, and reached about 30 feet in just 3 years.

And... Graceful leaves are a good choice for bamboo tea!

Bottom Line: Great for either taller screening, hedging , or as a focal point.

 

Odashimae

This bamboo is similar to Oldhamii,  and a very popular edible bamboo in Taiwan.  It may be somewhat cold sensitive in the Charleston area, and therefore should be planted in a sheltered location.

Bottom Line: A great choice for an edible bamboo.

Oldhamii

This bamboo is also known a "Giant Timber" bamboo.  It is a fast growing erect bamboo with large culms, from 4-5 inches in diameter at maturity.  The larger leaves along with the culm size contribute to its stately appearance. It defoliated with an extended cold snap of 19 degrees and strong winds and the existing culms died.

Please note that the picture is of a young 1 year old plant started from a 3 gallon container.  It reached a height of about 20 feet in the first year (with partial sunlight).

And... the new shoots are edible (cooked) and the leaves are a good choice for bamboo tea!

Bottom Line: A tall bamboo that makes a great focal point or can be used for screening at a taller height.

This bamboo is a dense clumper with branching at all heights of the culm.  And it's a fast grower with good height!  The straightness and strength of the culms provide a number of uses, including  pushing small boats ins shallow water, fishing poles, and also construction.

Please note that the picture is of a young plant started from a 3 gallon container. It reached a height of about 15-20 feet in the first year (with limited sun exposure).  It defoliated with an extended cold snap of 19 degrees and strong winds, but slowly bounced back with the existing culms producing some new leaves and new growth from the groung 

Bottom Line: A great  choice for a fast growing tall privacy screen. The culms are straight and strong, and therefore provide a number uses.

Bambusa Textilis Kanapaha




 

 

This is the tallest of the Textilis bamboos reaching up to a height of 50 feet.  The lower portion of the culms have a white powder giving it a blueish tint and have limited or no branching.

Please note that the pictures are of a young plant just started from a 7 gallon container.

Bottom Line: A beautiful and very tall cold hardy bamboo.  If it's height you want, this is a great choice.

Bambusa Emeiensis "Flavodivirens"


 

 

This bamboo is very similar to the Yin Yang, however the culms are yellow with green striping.  It defoliated with an extended cold snap of 19 degrees and strong winds, but bounced back in very early spring with the existing culms producing new leaves and branches.

This is a gorgeous erect growing bamboo.  The culms are a deep green with yellow stripes alternating 180 degrees between each internode. It defoliated with an extended cold snap of 19 degrees and strong winds, but bounced back in very early spring with the existing culms producing new leaves and branches.
